Rubber Molded Dummy Connector - 3 Pin Male RMG-3-MPD

Rubber Molded Dummy Connector - 3 Pin Male RMG-3-MPD — protective dummy plug (male) for rubber moulded underwater connectors. Rated 4,000 PSI in unmated condition. Protects connector face from contamination, biofouling, and mechanical damage during storage and single-ended deployment. Mates with RMG-3-FS female socket.

Rubber Molded Dummy Connector - 3 Pin Male RMG-3-MPD — Protective Dummy Connector for Unmated Subsea Connector Faces

The Rubber Molded Dummy Connector - 3 Pin Male RMG-3-MPD is a purpose-designed protective dummy connector that protects the face of an unmated rubber moulded underwater connector during storage, handling, and single-ended deployment at depth. When a connector in the system is not mated to its counterpart — during instrument deployment with only one end connected, during storage between dives, or during single-cable lowering operations — the open connector face is vulnerable to contamination, biofouling, physical impact, and hydrostatic pressure crushing of exposed contact areas.

The dummy connector provides a fully sealed, 4,000 PSI rated closure for the open face — maintaining the depth rating of the unmated connector and preventing any contamination of the O-ring seat and contact area that would degrade the next mating cycle.

4,000 PSI Unmated Protection Protects O-Ring Seal Face Neoprene Moulded Biofouling Prevention Mates with RMG-3-FS female socket

Key Design Features

  • Full depth-rated face protection — rated 4,000 PSI in unmated condition; maintains the pressure integrity of the connector face regardless of deployment depth
  • Neoprene moulded body — matches the elastomeric compliance of the live connector; compresses under hydrostatic load to maintain face seal; no rigid shell to crack under pressure
  • Contact protection — internal cavity protects gold-plated contact pins or sockets from seawater ingress, biofouling, and mechanical impact during single-ended deployment at depth
  • O-ring seat preservation — face seal O-ring on the dummy connector prevents contamination of the live connector O-ring seat; ensures clean, contamination-free mating surface for next connection cycle
  • Quick installation — mates to the live connector face in seconds; retained by the same face-seal engagement as the live mating connector; no tools required
  • Colour-coded for gender identification — dummy plug and dummy socket variants clearly distinguished to prevent reverse installation during field operations

Dummy Connector Selection Guide

ScenarioRecommended DummyReason
Storage between dives (any depth)Either LP or HPDepth not relevant; contamination protection is the purpose
Single-ended deployment <4,000 PSILP dummy (no contacts)Lower cost; depth rating sufficient; contacts not needed
Single-ended deployment 4,000–20,000 PSIHP dummy (with contacts)Contacts required to maintain O-ring seat geometry at full pressure
Long-term mooring (biofouling risk)HP dummyBiofouling grows into contact cavities; HP dummy fills cavity to prevent ingress

Typical Applications

  • Single-ended instrument deployment — dummy on the free end of a cable terminated at depth while the other end is connected to the instrument
  • ROV connector storage — dummy on every connector pair when ROV is in the workshop or onboard vessel between deployments
  • Hydrophone array branch connectors — dummy on unused branch positions of Y-cables and array junction boxes
  • Spare cable ends — protection for unused cable tails on ROV umbilicals equipped with more cable runs than currently active instruments
  • Transit and shipping protection — prevents connector face contamination and contact damage during shipping, air freight, and customs inspection handling

Maintenance

After removing a dummy connector from a live connector face, inspect the live connector O-ring seat for any contamination transferred from the dummy. Rinse with fresh water, inspect the O-ring for damage, and re-grease with silicone lubricant before mating the live connector. Store dummy connectors in a clean, sealed bag between uses — they are as susceptible to contamination as the live connectors they protect.

Order the Rubber Molded Dummy Connector - 3 Pin Male RMG-3-MPD

Always order one dummy connector per unmated end in your system — every open connector face in a subsea system should have a rated dummy installed whenever the connector is not mated to its live counterpart.
